12 Healthy Habits You Should Do for a Healthy Skin

healthy habits

Quality skincare products have a part to play in having good and healthy-looking skin, but it’s not just all that. While skincare products are helpful, they still have to be paired with healthy habits to get the best results. And most of the time, we tend to neglect the “simple ways” we can do to achieve healthy and clear skin.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body and acts as the first line of defense against external factors such as pollution, UV rays, and harsh weather conditions. That’s why taking good care of our skin is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. With that, here are some healthy habits that you should adopt to keep your skin healthy and glowing:

1. Stay Hydrated

The common phrase “stay hydrated” isn’t just a catch-phrase or an expression as it absolutely does make sense. If you’re not a fan of water and you’re the type to go for flavored drinks, this is your sign to rethink your lifestyle. Drinking enough water is crucial for maintaining good health, and this includes healthy skin. Water helps to flush out toxins from the body, which can cause breakouts and other skin issues. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.

2. Give Importance to Cleansing

Cleansing your skin is an essential part of any skincare routine. It helps to remove dirt, oil, and other impurities from your skin, which can cause breakouts and other skin issues. Be sure to choose a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. When natural oils are stripped off, your skin will be pushed to produce more oil and sebum that can clog the pores, leading to acne and breakouts.

3. Exfoliate Your Skin

Exfoliating your skin helps to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, helping to boost the texture and tone of your skin. However, be sure to choose an exfoliator that’s gentle enough for your skin type, as harsh exfoliators can cause irritation and damage. Avoid over-exfoliating as well, and exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week only.

4. Moisturize Your Skin

Moisturizing your skin is essential for keeping it hydrated and healthy. Choose a moisturizer that’s suited for your skin type, whether it’s oily, dry, or combination. A good moisturizer will help to keep your skin looking and feeling soft and supple.

5. Protect Your Skin From the Sun

Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays is essential for maintaining healthy skin. Be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 whenever you’re outside, on cloudy days, or even when you’re inside the house. Wearing protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses when you’re going out can also help to protect your skin from the sun.

6. Make Sure to Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being, including healthy skin. Lack of sleep can cause dark circles, puffiness, and other skin issues. Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night to help your skin look and feel its best.

7. Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential for maintaining healthy skin. These foods are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, which can help to protect your skin from damage caused by external factors such as pollution and UV rays.

Keep in mind that eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring and tasteless. Just be mindful of what you eat and how much of the seemingly “unhealthy stuff” you are consuming. For the record, you can eat sweet and salty foods, but do avoid munching too much of them. Balance is key at the end of the day.

8. Try to Manage Your Stress Levels

Chronic stress is caused by the day-to-day pressures of work or family, or by traumatic events. It can have detrimental effects on your health due to its prolonged and constant nature, manifesting harsh side effects even on your external appearance or on your skin.

Since it affects the mind and body of a person, it can lead to a host of health problems, including skin issues such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Managing stress levels through techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can help to reduce the risk of stress-related skin issues.

9. Avoid Too Much Alcohol Consumption

To be fair, drinking alcohol occasionally isn’t a bad thing, but if you make it a habit or a heavy part of your lifestyle, you may have to start cutting down on your alcohol consumption. This is because alcohol can dehydrate the skin, making it look dry and dull. Limiting alcohol consumption or avoiding it altogether can help to keep your skin looking healthy and hydrated.

Drinking too much alcohol can also have long-term health risks such as high blood pressure, weak immune system, cancer, alcohol dependence, mental health problems, and more.

10. Quit Smoking

For people who have been smoking for a long time, quitting it may not be an easy thing to do. However, pushing through with it can take a toll on your overall health, causing lung disease, heart disease, and more. On top of that, smoking can accelerate the aging process and cause wrinkles, fine lines, and other skin issues. Quitting smoking can help to improve skin health, as well as your overall health.

11. Make Exercise a Part of Your Healthy Habits

Regular exercise improves blood flow and promotes good circulation, helping to keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant. At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, such as brisk walking or cycling, can make a difference compared to doing nothing at all.

Take note that you don’t have to get into a rigid kind of exercise right away just to see results on your skin or your body right away. You can start with a low-intensity exercise or do exercise that suits your interest and your body condition. Don’t force yourself to do more than what your body can handle for the day.

12. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Harsh chemicals found in some skincare products, such as fragrances and alcohol, can cause irritation and other skin issues. Choose skincare products with natural ingredients and avoid products that contain harsh chemicals.
